Hadley Pell, a college-educated housewife and widow, is still reeling from the loss of her beloved husband five years ago. She lives in a small town in the Southern Appalachians where nothing much happens. Nothing much, that is, until murder comes to town. And it isn’t until Hadley is given the job of cleaning out the victim’s house, an incredible hoarder of the first degree, that Hadley begins to unravel the mystery.

When it's discovered that Eustian Singlepenny has been poisoned and a friend is arrested for his murder, Hadley dives head first into the muddy maze, searching for clues to the killer’s true identity.

A humorous tale full of local color and wit, this is the first book in the NOBODY mystery series.

Starts out a little slow, but once Ms Green gets started and get thru the background information to set up the story, it's really great! Very well written, although there are some obvious typos that show that spell check was used and not a human editor. The characters are very believable for the part of the country depicted, and dialogue in the local vernacular is very well done. Humorous and cute, and without sex or violence, so it's a true cozy. I especially loved the characters of Hadley and Beanie, who are the main characters in this story. Can't wait to read more of this series!

These books are hilarious!!

The second in the series was offered for free on one of my eBook Facebook pages. When I read the blurb on , I immediately searched for the first one. Series need to be read in order. I ended up buying all three and spending the night reading the first two. I stopped because I was hungry. I'll read the third after I eat something.

The writing is well done. I cannot remember any grammar errors. The story flows well. Who cares if the murder isn't found until later on. Much of the beginning was foundation and, in my opinion, much needed.

I love the way she brings in snippets of mountain lore and language. I hope there is a fourth one on the horizon.
This book is ruined by poor editing and fact checking. It is rife with misspelled and misused words and punctuation errors. (Hint running a spell checker is not the same as proofreading!) The biggest error, though is in one of the secondary characters, Anna. She's described as being a pilot and having "flown jet tankers over Iraq" in the Air Force. Then she "got her discharge and went back to school and earned her bachelor's degree." WRONG! Every pilot in the Air Force is an officer and has at the minimum a bachelor's degree before being selected for pilot training. Just five minutes spent on line in a fact-checking session would have uncovered this. POSSIBLE SPOILER ALERT The murder weapon was also not well-researched, as the level of poison that would have been produced by the method described may have made someone sick but shouldn't have been enough to kill someone - again something that could have been uncovered by a few minutes spent with Google.
This is a strange book. I am a bit surprised that there are so many positive reviews and that there are three further books featuring the protagonist.

Maybe it is that the book appeals more to Americans than anyone else. Not being American I could not get it - all the diversions and rambling thoughts of the main character were difficult to take. At one stage she made a chicken pot pie and every ingredient she used caused her to reminisce about someone in the community particularly the aged who were shut in due to infirmity and having to give up driving. She went through all their backgrounds! Why? I didn't get it. Also while it was nice of people to provide a monthly hot meal for the shut ins I could not help feeling that taking them out for a drive or to the flea market or to church or for coffee or shopping etc would be a better way of helping. Anyway I am digressing now just like the main character!

My patience was already ebbing when I reached chapter 15 - Hadley parks outside the Library to return some books. It takes 3 chapters to do this-chapters 15, 16 and 17. Also these were overdue books of her deceased husband's and Hadley is nervous about being asked to pay a hefty fine. I mean, really, what Librarian would charge a widow overdue fines for books her deceased husband had taken out. Chapter 18 seems to be all about ice cream - then chapter 19 takes us back a few months into the past. I gave up at that stage but did skip to the end to see 'whodunnit' assuming there was a 'dunnit' at all considering by chapter 19 there was still no indication of any crime having been committed.

Three comments

1. This book needs serious editing and pruning.
2. Why anyone would have done any work for such a litigious, lying miser is a mystery to me. Surely everyone would give him a wide berth knowing his history and the awful things he had done.
3. In fact it was also a mystery as to why anyone was bothered to find out how he died. As a victim he had no redeeming characteristics whatsoever.
Hadley went to college out of town. She met Harry Pell & they dated through college. The day before she was to graduate Harry asked to be his wife & said yes. He had taken a job offer of an accountant at Hope a Rock County. Hadley's home town. She loved Harry & after graduation the got married brother a Justice of the Peace. They arrived in Hope Rock County the same day.
Hadley had earlier been her younger sister Maury Brides Maid in her wedding to Bill. Bill was the lone police officer.
Hadley & Harry had happily married many years, when he died unexpectedly from a heart attack. She feel apart for many months. Her sister Maury was finally able to get to volunteer at the local wildlife preserve. That brought her to becoming involved.
This little town lived for gossip. They had Eustain Singlepenny a nasty old many who used so many in town. Ruined people over the years & no friends. He didn't show up for a court hearing, police officer Bill went to his home to find out if he was okay. Front door wasn't locked, there was junk piled to the ceiling all over. Bill found him dead in the kitchen. The body was sent to the county coroner. In the meantime Bill asked Hadley to clean out the house. She choose Beanie a man with 1 arm & 4/5 of the other to be her partner. He was a grave digger with the mind more of a child. They got as far as doing a video of the house. That was stopped because Singlepenny was poisoned. Now rumores start big time with Hadley trying to figure out who killed him. So much happens & figuring out who the killer is will be hard. There also a lot of funny happenings throughout the book at the Greasy Spoon Cafe & the local beauty parlor. Also with Hadley, Maury & Beanie. It was slow starting but gets better the more you read. Enjoy this book.
